Description:

Date/Time: September 27, 2023 | 2:55 - 3:25 pm ET

Surviving sepsis is an important milestone, yet it is crucial to recognize that some patients may face an uphill battle toward recovery. The recovery journey for these ICU survivors can unveil a landscape dotted with numerous complications, substantial disability, and enduring neurocognitive deficits. This presentation will explore the realm of chronic critical illness, examining the perplexing Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) that often ensues. With limited understanding and lacking targeted therapies, current research endeavors have culminated in the development of a groundbreaking murine model for PICS, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms of immune suppression. Early recognition and strategic intervention hold promise as crucial factors in curtailing the progression of this debilitating condition.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this session, the learner should be able to:

  • List complications that may develop following sepsis recovery;
  • Develop a personalized medicine approach for treating patients with sepsis;
  • Describe immunomodulatory techniques for managing septic patients.
