In this session, learners will explore the Virtual Sepsis Unit, an innovative approach to sepsis management developed at Baptist Health South Florida. The Virtual Sepsis Unit has helped Baptist Health South Florida to optimize and support patient care, reduce variation across all clinical care areas, and >span class="NormalTextRun SCXW142458792 BCX0" data-ccp-charstyle="eop">predictable, data-driven, high-quality care in adherence to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS) SEP-1 bundle. >span class="NormalTextRun SCXW142458792 BCX0">sing this model of care as an example, organizations can leverage existing telemedicine infrastructure, real-time clinical decision support software in the electronic health records, remote staffing, and centralized clinical expertise. She will also discuss how bundle compliance and centralized management of sepsis ultimately improved patient outcomes at her institution.

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of the session, the learner should be able to:

  • Explain the benefits and challenges associated with adherence to CMS sepsis treatment guidelines; 
  • Describe how centralized management of sepsis improves outcomes; 
  • Discuss how teamwork and collaboration are instrumental in the success of bundle build and increasing bundle compliance; 
  • Discover how involving clinical decision support, alerts, dashboards, and direct communication among members of the care team improves sepsis care for patients.

Lisa-Mae Williams, PhD, RN, CCRN-K, is the Operations Director for Tele-Critical Care (Tele-ICU) & Virtual Sepsis Unit at Baptist Health's Telehealth Center. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida, and a PhD from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Williams has been with Baptist Health South Florida for 20 years, serving at various times as a staff nurse in the ICU, a Clinical Educator for critical care and progressive care, and a Nurse Manager. 

Dr. Williams has conducted several presentations at national and international conferences and has authored multiple journal research articles related to her work in Telehealth. Her doctoral research has focused primarily on Tele-ICU nursing interventions’ impact on patient outcomes.

Recently, Dr. Williams was appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor at the Hebert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University. She is also Co-Director of the new Telehealth Elective for 4th Year Medical Students at Florida International University. She serves on the Center for Telehealth & eLaw (CTeL) Advisory Board and the CTeL White House stakeholder group. Dr. Williams has attended multiple meetings at the White House and Congress to advocate for removing restrictions on Telehealth Services.
