Description:

Nearly 20% of Americans live in rural areas, where delivering high-quality sepsis care despite access barriers can be challenging. Learn about some of the barriers to sepsis care and the ways that systems of care can be developed to support rural patients in low-volume hospitals. This presentation will also discuss the use of telemedicine in sepsis and how regional networks can be used to leverage quality improvement activities across wide geographic areas.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe current systems of care for rural sepsis patients, with a focus on clinical outcomes;
  • Review a framework for thinking about sepsis systems of care and how systems relate to local quality improvement initiatives;
  • Define strategies for developing regional sepsis networks and provide examples of novel care delivery.

Target Audience:

Nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, emergency responders, pharmacists, medical technologists, respiratory therapists, physical/occupational therapists, infection prevention specialists, data/quality specialists, and more.
