Sepsis quality/performance improvement can be a daunting task for healthcare organizations, but it is critical that healthcare workers are prepared to identify and manage sepsis. This training module is intended to help staff functioning in quality/performance improvement roles begin the process of sepsis quality improvement for their organizations. This high-level content is designed to facilitate identification of improvement opportunities for the program and/or participating individuals.

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of the activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Complete a review of sepsis epidemiology, definitions, and treatments;
  • Review basic program management strategies;
  • Discuss methods to conduct a current state system analysis;
  • Identify tools to determine system vulnerabilities that impact sepsis performance;
  • Create a running list of improvement opportunities and/or strategies;
  • Identify personal growth opportunities as related to sepsis program management.

Target Audience: 

Nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, emergency responders, pharmacists, medical technologists, respiratory therapists, physical/occupational therapists, infection prevention specialists, data/quality specialists, and more.

For over ten years, Kelly has worked to improve care for patients with sepsis. With a background in emergency nursing and performance improvement, Kelly created the sepsis program for a hospital system in the Bay Area. She also initiated a county collaborative of sepsis coordinators to enhance care delivery for patients with sepsis throughout the healthcare continuum. Kelly has presented both educational and facility-specific outcomes at a number of venues locally, nationally, and abroad.

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP17068 for 1.6 contact hours.

Other healthcare professionals will receive a certificate of attendance for 1.25 contact hours.
