In this opening session of the Sepsis Alliance Summit, Sandy Cayo welcomes attendees and shares why she joined the Sepsis Alliance Advisory Board: to continue her life's work to advocate for healthcare diversity, equity, inclusion, and wellness for disadvantaged and underserved communities.
Removing the Blindfold: Preventing the Next Pandemic
We live in a data-rich world that is poorly equipped to accurately and collaboratively gather, analyze and react to signals of disease threats. This includes challenges like antimicrobial resistance and outbreaks of diseases like multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), the flu virus, variants of Covid-19, and the next pathogen of pandemic potential. Building systems to better understand and trigger action to contain these threats will help us strengthen information systems for a range of health issues, including sepsis.
The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate how moving from a reactive to proactive approach toward pandemic preparedness can support better health outcomes across the board – and explain what it will take to build this type of global, equitable pathogen tracking system.

Dr. Sandy Cayo serves as the Vice President of Clinical Performance and Transformation at New Jersey Hospital Association. She oversees leadership of the Health Research Education Trust of NJ which has initiatives related to perinatal quality, hospital quality improvement, opioid prevention, HIV prevention, and health equity education. Sandy’s research interests focus on social determinants of health and improving access and overall health outcomes for BIPOC communities. She oversees the Quality Improvement Institute and Garden State Patient Safety Organization in New Jersey. As a lifelong learner, Sandy is in the process of completing her DNP-PhD program where her research focuses on the impact of discrimination on cardiovascular health in African American women.
Rick Bright, PhD

Rick Bright is currently the Senior Vice President, Pandemic Prevention and Response at The Rockefeller Foundation leading the development of the Foundation’s pandemic data and action platform that will prevent future pandemics by identifying and triggering responses to the earliest alerts of a disease outbreak and stopping it in the first 100 days. Prior to this role, he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response and the Director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prior to BARDA, Dr. Bright gained extensive experience in the biotechnology industry where he served in senior leadership and executive management roles. Dr. Bright has held senior scientific leadership positions in non-governmental organizations where he championed innovative vaccine development and manufacturing capacity expansion in developing countries. He also spent a decade in vaccine and therapeutics development at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For this work, Dr. Bright received the Charles C. Shepard Science Award for Scientific Excellence. Dr. Bright serves as an international subject matter expert in biodefense, emergency preparedness and response, vaccine, drug and diagnostics development and served as an advisor to the Biden Administration, World Health Organization, development of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine Forum on Microbial Threats. Dr. Bright received a Ph.D. in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis from Emory University and B.S. magna cum laude in Biology and Physical Sciences from Auburn University at Montgomery.
