Description: 

This session will review sepsis concepts as they relate to disparities in race and ethnicity. The focus will include consideration of incidence in sepsis and differences in care outcomes morbidity and mortality among vulnerable groups.

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of the activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the disparity in sepsis treatment and management among vulnerable populations;
  • Describe the underlying causes for disparities between racial and ethnic groups;
  • Identify sustainable and evidence-based approaches to manage disparity in sepsis care.

Target Audience: 

Nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, emergency responders, pharmacists, medical technologists, respiratory therapists, physical/occupational therapists, infection prevention specialists, data/quality specialists, and more.

Dr. Sandy Cayo serves as the Vice President of Clinical Performance and Transformation at New Jersey Hospital Association. She oversees leadership of the Health Research Education Trust of NJ which has initiatives related to perinatal quality, hospital quality improvement, opioid prevention, HIV prevention, and health equity education. Sandy’s research interests focus on social determinants of health and improving access and overall health outcomes for BIPOC communities. She oversees the Quality Improvement Institute and Garden State Patient Safety Organization in New Jersey. As a lifelong learner, Sandy is in the process of completing her DNP-PhD program where her research focuses on the impact of discrimination on cardiovascular health in African American women. 

Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP17068 for 1.3 contact hours.

Other healthcare professionals will receive a certificate of attendance for 1.0 contact hours.
