Empowering Antibiotic Stewardship: Understanding the Use of Procalcitonin

This webinar will reinforce better antibiotic use and provide strategies to better utilize the biomarker procalcitonin (PCT) in the most advantageous methods compared to non-specific biomarkers IL-1, IL-6, TNF, leukocytosis, and lactate.  The pathophysiology and kinetics will be reviewed, and applied in case studies to demonstrate best use guidelines. Finally, clinical and financial outcomes will be presented so the attendee can appreciate expected benefits of the application of PCT concepts.

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of the activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Restate the pathophysiology and kinetics of procalcitonin (PCT);
  • Identify current biomarkers used in the management of sepsis in bacterial infection;
  • Describe how PCT can aid in severity assessment and evaluation of therapy choices;
  • Restate the role of PCT in antibiotic stewardship;
  • Describe the expected clinical and health economic outcomes of PCT guided therapy.

Mike Broyles, PharmD has more than 30 years of experience as a Hospital Pharmacy and Laboratory Director providing patients with current concepts in the clinical use of drugs with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship. His current role is Director of Medical Affairs, Biomarkers for Thermo Fisher Scientific.  Prior to joining Thermo Fisher Scientific, Mike had more than 25 years consulting for a large IHN as their pharmacy advisory chairman to develop and implement clinical initiatives. His goal is to provide the leading thought processes in patient management and use technology to enhance the ability of clinicians to have the best options in patient’s clinical status, decision support, and improving outcomes through better clinical care.
